May 19, 2014 To Lake Tekapo

Our van awaits and we head out for a 3 hour drive to the Southern Alps of New Zealand and Mt. Cook. The drive is pleasant and we stop for our favorite drink, another flat white, and a lunch to break up the drive. We are taking a chance here as the weather is unsettled and we need to avoid a windy day or any other nasty weather. The plan is to helicoper to a glacier and our guide Steve has donated a bottle of Sparkling wine and it is on ice. We finally stop for a check with the pilot and the news is bad. The wind is blowing and they are not flying. Ugh.
There is a quaint old church on the shore of Lake Tekapo, the Church of the Good Shepherd. It was built in 1935, and was the first church built in the Mackenzie Basin. The church was built by pioneers as a joint community effort, by Anglicans Presbyterian and Catholic settlers. The church is one of the most photographed in New Zealand, and features an altar window that frames stunning views of the lake and mountains.
Our guide Steve does some fast work and shifting about and we will try again in the morning. So, we arrive at the hotel overlooking beautiful Lake Tekapo. The sun is refusing to shine and that is a shame because it is glacier fed and puts out the most amazing blue you have ever seen and it is even more shocking in the sunshine. We step out for some darn good Japanese food tonight, cross our fingers for tomorrow and finish off some wine to set the mood.
We close th evening with the most beautiful sunset...
