New Day....May 12th: Waiheke Island: After breakfast we took an early morning walk for light shopping and to catch our ferry for a 45 minute ride to the quaint Island of Waiheke for Wine Tasting and Touring.
Clyde here...So Tina told you how we got on to the ferry and headed out to Waiheke Island. The bay by Auckland – wait. Let’s talk about Auckland and how the New Zealand folks pronounce Auckland. Sounds like “Oakland” to these California ears and we all wonder how all these folks fly in from Oakland and do not speak like the Oakland talk we know. Now we know and so do you for your trip to Auckland. OK, back to the ferry trip through the pretty bay around Auckland and the captain finds the lsland we pull into a beautiful blue bay sounded by green hills and the bay holding maybe 10 sail boats and we think maybe this will be a special day.
Off the ferry and our guide give a smile when we introduce ourselves.
Martin is German (A smile from Krimhilde and exchange some German speak and a bond if formed). Martin decided it was time for a new start and so an island in the Bay of Auckland was the answer. A most genial fellow and we hit if off right away. We hit four places that make wine but as much as we all love wine, it is the views across beautiful green valleys, views of blue picture perfect bays looking out to the skyline of the City and all the while the sun dodging white clouds drifting by.
To top of the day our guide Martin makes good on his promise to play a little saxophone for us overlooking a beautiful bay framed by green hills and horses running in a meadow to our left.
We hate to leave this paradise but our ferry back to Auckland is due and we must force ourselves back to another meal to remember and more wine. What a day it was and we are just getting started!
