We hit the airport early and clear security and wait. Hawaiian Airlines gets to New Zealand by going to Honolulu. Sounds good to us so 5 hours later we land with a bunch of Sacramento people who head for the beach and we head to gate 30 and that is about two coffees away. Now the serious flying comes with just under 9 hours to go. The airplane is new and I must say we were treated very nice and they were generous with complimentary wine and food was tasty. The leg room sucks. I have heard that some people fly while in bed, bordoux wine and order meals but I do not believe it. Meanwhile, dinner down and Krimhilde takes a magic sleeping pill supplied from an unknown source in Southern California. Out goes Krimhilde with head against the window and feet lapped over my legs. Nice.
Here is the weird part and a strange beginning to our New Zealand adventure. Stops the plan upon landing and a warning from the crew, “Nobody move until the spraying is complete” “What the ----“ Down the aisle on either side with spray cans in hand and all the baggage doors open they blast away until the entire cabin is a fog. “Don’t worry folks” says the loud speaker, “The spray has been approved by the World Council of Health”. You can only hold your breath so long but I did my best but I must say that was weird and really, what the hell did they kill that did not kill us?
We lived and the rest of the immigration steps were easy and it was oh-so-nice to see a nice guy holding a sign with our name on it. Now, I thought that only happened to movie types but for a price, a guy meeting you with a nice car and how to find the hotel is a very nice thing. Into the hotel, check in and up to our room we go. A nice cup of tea and bed feels very good indeed. Sleeping in Auckland tonight; ain’t that something?
Morning breaks and we look out at the Auckland harbor and beautiful sun. A shower and breakfast and life looks good. We indulge in our first “Flat White”. It is a super thick latte and me like. A walk along the harbor, check out the ferry building for our next day and a bit of shopping and back to hotel to see if Jim and Tina were able to find this little island.
They do! How wonderful to find our buds in a hotel half a world away. Wine makes the day complete after we share our journeys over a nice meal of fish – mine fried and the others healthy.
